Is there anything in this research related to seizures? My daughter is 10 and has ASD w seizures. It SEEMS that we see benefit from Epsom salt baths, but it also seems that too much increases likelihood of seizure. I have vaguely understood what is supposedly going on here and relation to magnesium being a calcium channel blocker, but everything I read seems to indicate that there should be LESS seizure activity, etc.

Unfortunately, none of the research listed involving magnesium as an autism treatment focused on seizures. The majority studied changes in autistic behaviors. Also, almost all of these studies used magnesium combined with vitamin B6 as the treatment. Only one study included a treatment phase utilizing only magnesium (Vitamin B6, Magnesium, and Combined B6-Mg: Therapeutic Effects in Childhood Autism). That study did measure evoked potentials but found no difference compared to controls in the treatment phase that consisted of magnesium only. It should be noted that the purpose of that study was not to determine the effect of magnesium on seizures in individuals with autism.

It is also interesting to note that several of the earliest studies utilized evoked potentials as measurements of treatment with magnesium and vitamin B6. However, none of the studies since the early 1990′s reported using evoked potentials. (See http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1137451-overview#a1 for more information on the usefulness of evoked potentials in a clinical setting). This source suggests that MRIs became more useful than evoked potentials but none of the more recent studies utilizing magnesium and vitamin B6 have utilized MRIs.
